Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation ( in short called as PMR, also known as PHYSIATRY/ Rehabilitation medicine) is a medico-surgical specialty, which aims at comprehensive, goal based, quantified rehabilitation of the patients to make them as maximally independent as possible despite their disabilities.
The department is a one stop destination for all the rehabilitation needs be it medical, surgical or therapeutic needs. The department imparts a holistic approach for the rehabilitation through a team lead by the Rehabilitation expert, who is also called the Physiatrist- a doctor specialised in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, prosthetic and orthotics, speech therapist and psychologist. The physiatrist is the first point of contact who formulates achievable goals with the team to make the patient maximally independent.
The facilities can be divided broadly into
The patients need not go to different specialties for the commonly occurring complications like pressure ulcers, bladder problems, orthopedic complications. The physiatrist is trained to impart surgical and medical interventions for the complications in the same department. Although expert interdisciplinary references will be sought after when necessary.

Treatment of all routine medical problems encountered by disabled individuals is carried out by the department. Operations are performed for the surgical management of pressure sores and for correction of deformities
Management of all types of pain with physical modalities, therapies as well as interventional pain management procedures
A variety of physical modalities like heat, sound, light, and electricity are used to alleviate pain and improve functioning.
Occupational therapy is concerned with enhancing a disabled person’s functioning through training in specific activities and skills.
The ultimate aim of rehabilitation is to enable the disabled person to be a productive individual within society. This action extends beyond the walls of the hospital to ensure that vocational
